d. 7 Oct 2007 - Harlowton, Montana

From Billings Gazette - Billings, MT - 9 Oct 2007

Submitted by Henry L. Schmick

HARLOWTON - "It's a sad day," Bill would quietly remark, remembering a lost loved one. Today, we must now repeat quietly back, "it's a sad day," because our wonderful brother, uncle, friend, teacher and storyteller has left this earth for adventures in heaven on Oct. 7, 2007.
William Vincent "Bill" Schroeder was born in Billings on Oct. 14, 1944. He is preceded in death by his father, Harvey Schroeder; his mother, Hildegard Schroeder; and his sister, Virgie Rally. Bill is survived by two sisters, Mary Vadnais of Billings and Karen McHenry of Worland, Wyo.; special friend Dorene Amber; and many, many other loving friends and fishing and hunting buddies.
While Bill wouldn't like us to go on about him, we thought a few things should be shared for those who knew him best to remember and smile. Bill loved a good story … he loved to hear them and tell them, especially if the story included humor. He had a hallmark chuckle unforgettable to anyone who heard it … we still hear it now. Many of his stories included mishaps like one where his truck rolled away as he watched helplessly from a short distance - probably not too hilarious when it was happening but very funny when he told of it later. He so enjoyed and appreciated the outdoors. He left Billings and made his home in Harlowton where for many years, he became acquainted with prime hunting and fishing spots. This was his element, his comfort and his church. He declined holidays with family to spend it in the hills with his creator - just like in the comic strip Rick O'Shay. It would embarrass him to know but he was a sort of living legend to his nieces and nephews - he'd go off on his own in the mountains and hills. To the younger members of his family, this was awesome and mysterious.
He will be remembered as kind, gentle and thoughtful - never an unkind word. We are all better people for having the privilege of knowing you.
Memorials may be given to the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation, PO Box 242, Harlowton, MT 59036. Memorial services will be 1 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 11, at Perkins Funeral Home.
