Almena was born on May 24, 1918 in a sod house in rural Bayard to Henry and Amalia Zwetzig Kniss. Almena married ALBERT BERNHARDT on Sept. 7, 1938. Survivors: her sister, Edna (Henry E.) Schneider of Gering; her nieces, Tehra Lyn (Jack) Atwater of Rapid City, SD and Fara Joy (Pat) Mawhinney of Wellington, Colo.; her nephews, Richard and Jerry Bernhardt of Bayard and LeRoy (Patricia) Bernhardt of Scottsbluff-by all their families, and by her daughter, Dr. Nancy Bernhardt Holland of St. Albans, Vt. Her extended family includes her "almost son" Ron Akers and family of Gering and her "other daughters," Helen Thompson, Pauli McCarthy, and Coleen Mannering, of Scottsbluff.
